on the first flu-related death in the bay area. elissa. >> reporter: hi, michelle. that's right. an elderly woman died from the flu. she lives in santa clara county and the flu season -- excuse me, the flu is now widespread throughout california. so the demand for a vaccine is up. 200,000 doses of the vaccine have been shipped to safeway pharmacies all over the united states. the vaccine is the best prevention against the flu and has a 62% level of effectiveness. there have been five deaths from the flu in the state so far. the latest a 98-year-old woman from santa clara county. she marks the first bay area death. a health official said the woman died from the flu and pneumonia. officials with the centers for disease control say this is the worst flu season in a decade. it came early this year in california. it usually doesn't peak until february. the cdc urges people who get sick to stay home. >> method of staying hydrated, staying home, not sending sick children to school, washing your hands, probably the best way of preventing the sprea

. it's tuesday, january 15. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:00 on your tuesday now. >>> freezing temperatures continue to grip our state but we are going to warm up in short order. >> yeah. i hope so. we have had day after day of these very cold temperatures. today we are not seeing the winds so even colder outside if you are stepping out there now. temperatures plunging into the 20s and 30s. that air is coming from the land to the sea so that offshore wind is drying allowing it to fall like a rock and we are seeing that this morning. some very cold temperatures around the bay area. and freeze warnings up for many of the valleys. looking for the temperatures to bottom out maybe the mid-20s for some spots but frost even inside the bay. how about this, 26 degrees right now in fairfield, 29 in livermore, 29 in santa rosa. and 33 degrees in san jose. as we head toward the afternoon, we should see a little bit warmer temperatures well into the 50s in some spots. maybe some 60s, that's right, gu

to have you with us. it's january 16. >> it is. and i'm michelle griego. two people are confirmed dead this morning after a helicopter crashed into a crane in england. this happened during rush hour in the heart of central london. >> it did. cbs news's rita nissan joins us live from london to explain how this happened and it happened i guess right near the british spy agency. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. this really took place in the heart of central london right at the height of the morning rush hour. skies are clear now but this morning there was heavy fog and that's why authorities say the pilot of the helicopter was trying to divert to a nearby airport and two people did die. the pilot of that helicopter, also one person on the ground. people on the ground say they saw the happen the flying very fast up the river and then it spun out of control when it hit that crane. and that crane is some 50 stories up in the air. it is part of a residential building that is being built here in central london. >> you know, rit

, january 17. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. new this morning 20 hostages have reportedly escape from their captors in algeria. islamic militants continue to hold dozens of foreigners at the natural gas facility. a security official in algeria says the escapees include americans and and europeans. militants attacked the complex south of algiers yesterday. the gas plant is surrounded by the algerian army now in a standoff with the militants. >> by all indication, this is a terrorist act. we condemn it. it's serious when americans are taken hostage. >> they say they are operating in north africa. they say the raid is meant to punish algeria for helping france's military operation against islamic fighters in nearby mali. >>> it's been over 7 years since hurricane katrina devastated new orleans and now federal inspectors have found hundreds of levees in danger of failing all across the country. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington test us northern california levees could be at risk as well and she joins us

already took place earlier tonight. the kids inaugural concert! first lady michelle obama and daughters sasha and malia rocked out with hundreds of kids from military families and washington-area public schools. the concert included katy perry, mindless behavior, usher and members of the cast of the fox series "glee." the concert continues a tradition started at the 2009 inauguration by honoring the nation's military families. president obama will have two swearing-ins: a public ceremony on monday and a private one tomorrow. we'll have more on the preparations for the big event coming up. >> there is a constant battle on who is right, who is wrong on the next edition of people behaving badly. crisis still under way. michelle kosinski has the latest. good morning. >> hi, willie. >> it appears they have raided the facility again trying for rescue more hostages. would not man hid will under his bed. others inside a suspended ceiling. u.s. official was quoted as saying some americans did escape, but not all are accounted for. what is known at this bp gas facility in a remote desert is that algerian army tried to free hostages held by a heavily armed islamic gang. some militants were killed and so were some hostages. algerian officials say at least six others were wounded. some hostages managed to escape. bp says some are already on a plane to london. stephen mcfall was able to get away from the gunman, who made him wear a vest with explosives. his family and young son at home overjoyed. >> what's the first thing you'll do when you see him? >> give him a big hug. and i won't let go. >> reporter: it is still unknown exactly how many americans were here. militants said seven. a u.s. official has been quoted anonymously as saying at least some escaped. militants called the stunni

to the ground in a fiery happy. michelle, what can you tell us? >> reporter: this happened during rush hour in a very busy part of central lan r london. a commercial helicopter carrying at least two passengers hit a tower here, hitting part of that crane, ending in a fireball, killing that pilot and landing on top of a car that was also inflamed. we know that one person was rescued from a burning car. another eyewitness said she just left the train station and was looking at the top of the buildings, marveling that in the fog you couldn't see them at all. at that moment she heard an explosion like a bomb, terrifying people in the area, and then what looked like a meteor shower with debris raining down. the helicopter might have been trying to land because of the fog, trying to get to safety. at least nine people were hurt, one critically, and part of the investigation is whether the light on top of that crane was working. matt? >> all right, michelle kozinski in london on that story this morning. michelle, thank you very much. savannah? >>> boeing is dealing with another problem this mornin
